Mathematics

By Lalit SharmaCBSE has introduced one more elective course for Senior Secondary Classes, namedas Applied Mathematics, from the academic session 202021. This course is mainly for the students of Arts and Commerce streams. Now, the obvious question arises: What is this Applied Mathematics all about? How is it different from the Core Mathematics (Mathematics meant for Science subjects)?In fact, Applied Mathematics involves the application of mathematical methods to solve problems in various fields such as Commerce, Economics, Business, Medicines, Social Sciences, Computer Science, etc. In other words, Applied Mathematics is a combination of mathematical methods and specialised knowledge. It is the application of mathematics to realworld problems. The difference between Core Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is that the former's main objective is to solve the problems for the sake of mathematics, while the later is used to solve realworld problems. In other words, Core Mathematics is fully abstractthinking course, and Applied Mathematics is based on the application of Mathematical knowledge.
in real life and another discipline too. But, these two branches are made for each other.
As per the CBSE, the main objectives of Applied Mathematics at Senior Secondary Classes are:
To develop an understanding of basic mathematical and statistical tools and their applications in the field of commerce (business/finance/economics) and social sciences.
To model realworld experiences/problems into mathematical expressions using numerical/algebraic/graphical representation;
To make sense from the data by organising, representing, interpreting, analysing, and to make meaningful inferences from the realworld situations;
To develop logical reasoning skills and apply the same in simple problem solving;
To reinforce mathematical communication by formulating conjectures, validating logical arguments and testing hypothesis;
To make connections between Mathematics and other disciplines.
The series A Textbook of Applied Mathematics (Volume 1 and Volume 2) for Senior Secondary Classes is an exciting and innovative series, which has been developed to meet the objectives of Applied Mathematics discussed above. For each level, the course has been covered in two volumes — Volume 1 and Volume 2. This series is strictly made as
per the syllabus for Applied Mathematics (subject code 241) recently released by the CBSE. The studentfriendly series teaches Applied Mathematics in such an interesting and comprehensive manner that even an average student has no difficulty in grasping the fundamental concepts of the subject. The books in this series have been designed to develop substantial mathematical skills to solve the problems in the field of Business, Economics, Commerce, Social Science, etc.
