About the Book

Composite – An Integrated Term Course for Classes 1 to 5 has been designed and formulated in accordancewith the guidelines of the latest National Curriculum Framework (NCF). It is a set of fifteen books,three for each class and one for each term. Each book includes subjects such as English, Mathematics, EVS/Science, Social Studies and General Knowledge. The aim of the course is to make learning a joyfulexperience. Each book closely interweaves concepts to lay a strong foundation at the primary level. The course focuses on the interactive approach to make the children active participants in the process of learning.

English
English content is a true blend of the best of both worlds—past and present. In fact, it is the need of the hour. The stories are based on children’s interests and therefore, hold their attention. For the first few classes, the lessons draw upon pupils’ everyday experience, allowing links to be made between home and school. It has been ensured that the necessary sentence patterns and structures are included. The graded exercises have four components: Comprehension Skills, Vocabulary Skills, Listening & Speaking Skills and Writing Skills. These lay appropriate emphasis on the four basic language skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Grammar Section in each book provides clear conceptual understanding along with a variety of examples
and comprehensive exercises.

Mathematics

The content in mathematics has been dealt in such an interesting and comprehensive manner that even an average child has no difficulty in grasping the fundamental concepts of mathematics. The content follows a graded and spiralling approach, keeping in mind the age and level of understanding of the child. Each chapter begins with an exercise under the heading What We Have Learnt, which refreshes the concepts learnt in the previous class. Assignments under Mental Maths not only enhance the mathematical and calculation skills of the children but also cement the concepts learned. Fun Time contains out of the way questions, which challenge the ability of the children to grasp the main idea. Revision Test at the end of each chapter checks the retention capacity and the level of understanding of the children. Maths Lab Activity at the end of each chapter helps the children to develop different strategies for solving problems.

Environmental studies
The NCF lays emphasis on learning by asking appropriate questions, and carrying out discussions with adults at home, in school and among themselves. This approach has been adopted in EVS content because it has been increasingly felt that children learn more through talking, observing and discussing with other people — both adults and children. Activities throughout the text stimulate the thinking of the children and encourage them to frame their own questions in their quest for knowledge. It gradually extends the child’s understanding of his/her world, beginning from the immediate self, to include the family, the neighbourhood, the locality and also the country. It develops understanding about biological, social and cultural aspects of life by citing examples from everyday life. It inculcates sensitivity for environment and life, and love for nature.

Science
This content emphasises meaningful learning of science for the overall development of learners. It focuses onhelping children understand their natural environment and correlate science with their everyday experiences in an interesting and comprehensive manner. The text has been designed with beautiful illustrations to help children develop skills of observation, investigation and scientific attitude. These tools help students to gain knowledge, understand concepts at a quick pace and retain them in their memory. Various Learning tools like Let’s learn about, Activity Time, Let’s Experiment, Let’s Know more, etc. and Assessment tools like Let’s Do, Let’s Acquire, Let’s Think and Answer, etc. make learning of science a joyful experience.

Social Studies
A totally new and innovative approach to teaching social sciences has been adopted in this section. Thelearners study the basic facts and acquire rudimentary knowledge of the subjects dealt with. They are led step by step towards an understanding of themselves, their homes, families and environment. Profusely illustrated, each lesson, is learner-centred, activity-based, and with a variety of assignments to help the students understand the role they have to play in this rapidly growing and ever changing world. The lessons enhance their life skills and equip them with a high civic sense and arm them with an ability to face the challenges in life with confidence and as responsible citizens.

General Knowle dge
This section offers a variety of information that will lead to the all-round development of the students. Topics covered in this section have been carefully graded, not only to arouse the curiosity of the learners, but also to provide them with information which would help them to keep up with the changes in the world around them. The main objective of G.K. section is to create a sense of wonder in students and a desire to learn and find out more and more about the world around them. We look forward for valuable feedback and constructive criticism from the students, teachers and parents, which will be given due consideration in the future reprints and editions of the books.
