By - S. N. SharmaThe series of books entitled Mathematics Enrichment Lab Activities for Classes VI to X has been developed in strict accordance with the latest syllabus prescribed by the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi.
While preparing these books, guidelines of the CBSE has been taken care of. As per CBSE, out of 100 marks, 5 marks have been allotted to Portfolio and 5 marks have been allotted to Lab Practical. Also, the activities/projects given in these books
are based on the activities/projects given in the CBSE/NCERT books. The main objective of these activities is to make the teaching-learning process of Mathematics interesting, enjoyable and result-oriented. The Central Board of Secondary Education
(CBSE) also suggests that the learning of Mathematics should be activity-oriented and every school must have a Mathematics laboratory to fulfill the above objective. The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) also lays emphasis on activity-oriented learning
and recommends that teaching of Mathematics should aim to help students realize that Mathematics as a discipline relates to our experiences and is used in our daily life. Learning Mathematics by classroom method sends a message that it is a set of
rules and operations to be learned by heart and has no use in daily life. The learning-by-doing method disproves the above message. Going through the activities given in these books will enhance the truthfulness of the statement that the learning-by-doing method of teaching Mathematics helps children understand mathematical concepts and apply them in related situations.
