University and College Ranking 2023

On 5th June, the Ministry of Education released NIRF India Ranking 2023 for higher education. The report considers several parameters to rank institutes. In the overall category (when all parameters are considered), here is the list of the top 10 institutions. 

  1. India Institute of Technology, Madras 

  2. Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore

  3. India Institute of Technology, New Delhi 

  4. India Institute of Technology, Bombay 

  5. India Institute of Technology, Kanpur 

  6. All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi 

  7. Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur 

  8. Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee 

  9. Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati 

  10. Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi 


What is NIRF? 

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) guides how institutions of higher learning are ranked in India. The framework was released in 2015 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (renamed to the Ministry of Education in 2020.) 

The methodology is based on the recommendation of the Core Committee set up by the MHRD. The committee identified some broad parameters to assign ranking to institutions. 



The NIRF uses five broad parameters to assign ranks to institutions. 

  1. Teaching, Learning, and Resources 

  2. Research and Professional Practices 

  3. Graduation Outcomes 

  4. Outreach and Inclusivity 

  5. Perception 



The NIRF ranks across eight domains. 

  1. Engineering 

  2. Management 

  3. Pharmacy 

  4. Medical 

  5. Dental 

  6. Law 

  7. Architecture and Planning

  8. Agriculture and Allied Sectors

It ranks under five categories.
